Language App Glitch Turns Dinner into Footwear-Based Confusion
When American tourist Lisa Brenner tried to order spicy noodles at a street vendor in Bangkok, her translation app confidently blurted, “One order of spicy socks, please. With extra foot sweat.” The vendor paused, nodded solemnly, and handed her a menu of orthopedic cotton blends.
“I thought it was a prank,” Lisa said, “but then he started boiling socks in a wok.”
The moment was captured by a nearby influencer livestreaming his “Bro Eats Asia” series. The video now has over 12 million views and the hashtag #SockSoupChallenge is trending among adventurous teens with no understanding of gastrointestinal boundaries.
Translation experts blame the error on an update that confused regional dialects with eBay listings. “She meant ‘sen lek tom yum,'” explained linguist Dr. Nguyen. “Instead, the app heard ‘scented sock yum.'”
